About this image
358. Ordeal Plant or Tanghin and Parokeets of Madagasear.
Gerbera Tanghin, Hook,, yields a poisonous juice which was formerly much employed in Madagascar to detect and punish crime. If the guilty or suspected person survived the ordeal his innocence was proclaimed, though the escape was usually owing to some innocuous drug having been, for a consideration, substituted for the Tanghin.
