About this image
221. Foliage, Flowers and Fruit of a common Indian forest tree.
This is Bauhinia variegata, Linn. The genus Bauhinia is numerous in species, widely diffused in warm countries. It belongs to the Leguminosae and is allied to Cassia (332), and Poinciana (343). Observe the twin leaflets, a character which suggested the happy idea of dedicating the genus to the brothers John and Caspar Bauhin, botanists of the sixteenth century.
