About this image

365. Strelitzia and Sugar Birds, South Africa.

The genus Strelitzia, of which four or five species are known, is peculiar to South Africa, and its botanical affinity is with the Banana (Musa) and with the traveller's tree of Madagascar (Ravenala). S. augusta (see 369) much more nearly resembles the genera named than the present, which is S. Reginae, Ait. and the most ornamental of them all. Its seeds are eaten by the Kaffirs. Another species (S. juncea, Andr.) is remarkable for the blade of the leaf being undeveloped.
