About this image
26. The blue puya and cactus at home in the cordilleras, near Apoquindo, Chili, 1880
Oil on board by Marianne North, 1880.The grand Puya, depicted above life-size, is here seen associated with Cereus Quisco. in its home on the steep, stony slopes of the Cordilleras, where there is little other vegetation. The valley below is filled with cloud, which for a moment has blown away, revealing to the artist this fine group in various stages of decay. This excursion was made after plate 25 of the inflorescence had been painted.
