About this image

420. A South African Water-Plant in Flower and Fruit.

The "Water Uyentjes" (Aponogeton distachyum, Thunb.) is eaten as a salad at the Cape of Good Hope. As happens with many other water plants, after the flowering period the flower spikes are pulled under water, where the seed ripens ; but in order to show the ripe fruit it was necessary to bring it to the top in the painting. This water-plant is hardy, in the warmer parts, at least, of the United Kingdom, though it does not produce such fine flowers as at home.
